The Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is the only land tortoise native to France. Its breastplate - exhibited here by Franck Bonin and Stéphane Gagno - has two large, relatively continuous black bands. The distinction between sexes is fairly easy in adults: the male tortoise has an average size 12% smaller than the female, with a concave plastron, while that of the female is flat, and has a significantly longer tail to shelter the penis.
