Mont Sainte Odile, in the Lower-Rhine, is one of the pillars of Alsace's religious heritage. Its sanctuary, perched on pink sandstone cliffs, includes a basilica and four chapels. Sainte Marie of Niedermunster Abbey is located 1,676 ft (511 m) above sea level, at the foot of the Mont. It was founded around 700 to accommodate pilgrims who could not access the shrine located at 2,516 ft (767 m). In ruins in 1838, it was rebuilt identically between 1848 and 1850 with materials found on-site.
