The Issoire lynx (Lynx issiodorensis) lived in Europe at the end of the Pliocene (5.3 to 2.6 million years ago). It probably migrated to the USA through the Bering Strait and is considered the ancestor of modern lynxes. Remains of the feline were discovered, at the beginning of the 19th century, in Issoire in the Puy-de-Dôme department. Smaller but longer than the current lynx, it already had 28 teeth like its descendant. The Issoire lynx survived until 500,000 years ago.
