The separate order of the Phoenicopteriforms only includes the Phoenicopteridae family, itself consisting of three genera and six species known under the generic name of flamingos. Dating back at least thirty million years, it is one of the oldest current orders of birds of which fossil traces have been found both in the New World (Caribbean, Central, and South America) for the red flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) and in the Old World for the greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus).
