One of two Koenigsbourg castles

0
Dominating the entire Alsace plain, the domain of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle aroused desires for centuries. During the 12th century, the region was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Frederik of Swabia first had two castles built on this location, the Haut-Koenigsbourg (then called Castrum Estruphin) and the small Koenigsbourg, today a ruin next to the large fortress. The dukes of Lorraine and the bishop of Strasbourg claimed the fief when the line of Hohenstaufen died out, and the castle eventually returned to the Holy Roman Empire.
