A stucco-based decoration

The Gallery of Apollo in the Louvre is 61.34 metres long and 15 metres high. It took more than two centuries to complete its decoration. In 1661, Colbert entrusted Charles Le Brun with the task of decorating it on the theme of the Sun, which was dear to Louis XIV. The painter decided to set his paintings with stucco that had never been done before. From 1663 onwards, he entrusted the sculptors François Girardon, Thomas Regnaudin, Gaspard and Balthazar Marsy with the task. In barely two years, the artists created a series of stucco figures that punctuate the vault of the gallery. The paintings, however, were not completed until the 19th century.
