A decline in agricultural surfaces

The 2010 agricultural census showed a fall in the utilized agricultural area in Martinique from 126,024 acres (51,000 ha, i.e 46 % of the territory) in 1973 to less than 61,766 acres (25,000 ha). The main productions remain banana fruit (44 % of the cultivated land) and sugar cane (18 %). They occupy the majority of the space in open field crops in the low and middle elevation areas of the island. Elsewhere, there is a bocage landscape made up of small plots. Formerly used for Creole gardens, it is today devoted to food polyculture. The traditional production of root and tuber crops (yam, dachine, cassava, sweet potato, etc.) is now overtaken by that of fresh vegetables (pumpkin, cucumber, pepper, red/green bean, turnip, cabbage, etc.).
