A relatively easy landing

Over 3.10 miles (5 km) long, from Sainte-Marie-du-Mont to Quinéville, Utah Beach is the westernmost of the American landing zones of June 6, 1944. The main assault took place opposite the town of Saint-Martin-de-Varreville. The beach was built up against an area of poorly defended swamps, and the 28 amphibious tanks penetrated inland barely two hours after the landing. Only 200 soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing. The American droppings of paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions organized the day before on Sainte-Mère-Église and Chef-du-Pont were much more devastating.
