On August 19, 1942, an Allied raid took place in Dieppe and the four neighboring municipalities of Pourville-sur-Mer, Puys, Berneval, and Varengeville-sur-Mer. The South Saskatchewan Regiment and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada remained blocked after crossing the Scie river at Pourville-sur-Mer and had to retreat. Some 1,946 soldiers were taken prisoners, and 916 lost their lives. This failed landing was thoroughly studied to prepare that of June 6, 1944. War memorials dedicated to the fallen soldiers stand on the beaches of Dieppe, Puys, and Pourville-sur-Mer.
