A canal - like the Burgundy Canal here - is an entirely or partially artificial watercourse. It can correspond to the bed of a channeled river, to a lateral construction filled with water from a river or to a complete construction where there was no watercourse. Its biotope is characterized by the regularity of its course, the homogeneity of its banks and the control of its water level by locks.
