Like the cockle and the warty venus, the clam is a burrowing shellfish that lives in sandy muddy soils between 1.9 and 5.9 inches (5 and 15 cm) deep and reveals small holes on the surface. Male clams can be spotted at low tide by rising tide thanks to the two small holes that allow them to breathe, while female clams leave a single figure-eight-like hole. Greyish and slightly elongated, the clams measure about 1.5 inches (4 cm); male clams are larger and have distinct ridges, while female clams are smaller and smoother.
