The Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Caen is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the final resting place of William the Conqueror. Nearby stands the Abbaye-aux-Hommes (Men's Abbey) erected to repair the illegality of his marriage with his cousin Mathilde. The cloister was rebuilt in the 18th century by Guillaume de la Tremblaye. The corridors provide access to the chauffoir, the scriptorium, the grand staircase, and the porterie. Today the scriptorium houses temporary exhibitions while the permanent exhibitions occupy the chauffoir and the porterie.
