The Camargue horse is closely linked to the sea. A regional legend even claims that it was born from its foam. A man is said to have thrown himself into the sea to escape a black bull chasing him. A stallion - presented as the ancestor of all Camargue horses - would then have emerged from the foam to save him and would have told him that he would never be his slave but his friend.
