A Renaissance Castle in the middle of the vineyards

The Clos de Vougeot Castle is all in stone and wood. The monks built the estate with the extracted limestone from the Vougeot quarry and they cut down the oaks in the lush Morvan forest. First, the impressive semi-underground cellar was built, then the attic and the monks’ dormitory. During the Renaissance, in 1551, Dom Jean Loisier, an abbot from the Abbey de Cîtreaux decided to add a wine production room, consisting of 2 main decorated buildings. The Clos de Vougeot is considered a Renaissance jewel.
