The castle of Rustrel was built during the 17th century, as evidenced by the date 1626 engraved on its sundial. Its construction in the village's center was decided by the dukes of Lévis Ventadour, then lords of Rustrel. According to the municipal archives, it replaced the castle of Villevieille demolished by order of the town council in 1590 for a price of twenty-five écus (crowns) corresponding to a handful of euros.
