A self-sufficient castle

The Haut-Koenisbourg castle holds a strategic position between France, Germany, and Switzerland. Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to make it a medieval imperial showcase. The architect Bodo Ebhard rebuilt the dungeon, which was partially destroyed. A roof was added to it, and the imperial eagle still sits at its top. The addition of the mill is more questionable, even though one probably existed during the Middle Ages. The castle had to be autonomous and provide bread to its garrison and inhabitants.
