Created in 1967 by Guy Sébastien, Koko René Corail, and basket weavers, the Caribbean basketry center of Morne-des-Esses is located in the municipality of Sainte-Marie on the northwest coast of Martinique. Dedicated to Captain Nicolas, its objective is to preserve and perpetuate the know-how and technical gestures of the Caribbean basket weavers, the first inhabitants of the island. Its permanent exhibition named Vive la vannerie (Long live basketry) allows discovering the different stages of the transformation of plants such as cachibou and aroman into fibers and then into objects. It presents an overview of the great diversity of traditional and modern motifs emblematic of Martinican basketry. A shop, annual activities, workshops, meetings as well as interactive spaces for creation, demonstration, and initiation are also offered to visitors.
