The campanile and its four bells

0
In 1701, Menton belonged to the Principality of Monaco. Its Prince Antoine I then decided to have a large campanile built for the Saint-Michel church consecrated in 1675. The term campanile refers to the isolated tower of a church that accommodates its bells or campana in Italian. The 174-ft high baroque campanile of Saint-Michel Church was completed in 1703. It has historically housed the three bells of Saint-Michel, Carlo-Maria, and Saint-Isidore, joined in 2019 by a fourth one weighing 522 pounds (237 kg) called Saint-Pierre.
