A vibrant cultural center
From the 1950s and 1960s, actors, artists, and writers transformed Saint-Paul-de-Vence into a vibrant cultural center. The big names of French and international cinema, attracted to the Côte d'Azur by the Victorine studios in Nice and the Cannes Film Festival, met there at the Colombe d'Or, the inn located at the entrance of the village. Some, like Curd Jurgens, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Vittorio de Sica, Michael Caine, or Liza Minelli just passed by. Others like Jacques Prévert, James Baldwin, or Marc Chagall settled permanently in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Yves Montand and Simone Signoret became the emblematic couple of the village, where they met in 1949 and married in 1951, paving the way for other famous couples.
