An emblematic boat of the Mediterranean

An emblematic boat of the Mediterranean coasts, the Catalan bark is a long and thin skiff with a long keel. Usually built by mestres d'aixa heirs of ancestral know-how in the small Catalan ports, these fishermen's boats with a round Latin sail have no home port. When returning from fishing, the Catalan barks are drawn on the beach. Around harbors like Banyuls-sur-Mer in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, they serve for anchovy fishing with driftnets in summer. These boats are traditionally led by crews of three to five men and are still numerous today in the ports of Languedoc and Roussillon.
