Alençon lace has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2010. Without weft or warp, it owes its consistency only to the dexterity of one stitch, the point d'Alençon, of great complexity. Seven hours are indeed necessary to create a square centimeter, and the training to become a lacemaker requires seven to ten years. Louis XV called Alençon's his winter lace because of the density of its patterns. Fashion adapted it to every tendency until the French Revolution and the progressive mechanization that replaced it. Alençon lace has been known as the queen of lace since the Universal Exhibition in London in 1851.
