For a long time, the mountainous Corsican hinterland has served as a refuge for the population by sheltering many perched villages. Despite the difficulties of its development, its slopes were less risky than the low coastline, submitted to malaria until 1944, and made it possible to better resist the instability of the Mediterranean zone.
