This imposing specimen of cursed fig tree (Ficus citrifolia) with giant intertwined roots can be seen in Martinique, near Anse Michel and Cap Chevalier. Remarkable in the Martinican nature where they grow in the forest but also on certain historical ruins, the cursed fig trees are strangler fig trees characterized by their system of development by suffocation and their rapid growth up to more than 98 ft (30 m) high. Their seeds, disseminated by fig wasps, bats, or birds on support trees, launch aerial roots to the ground in search of nutrients and then to the top of the host tree in a race for light. While waiting to become autonomous, they develop by drawing nutrients from the trees that host them until they suffocate and rot. Considered as magic and evil trees, cursed fig trees are present in every Martinican municipality. They often occupy locations related to particular events. They are also used in the composition of voodoo recipes for black magic. The people of Martinique claim that in the heart of the hollow trunks of cursed fig trees hide evil spirits and spectral beings from whom they prefer to get away once night has fallen.
