Its dark body, very long and fawn neck, long pointed beak and webbed feet characterize the African darter. It feeds mainly on fish but also captures amphibians, water snakes or turtles and aquatic invertebrates that it harpoons under the surface of the water. Without glands capable of producing a king of waterproof oil, it must perch, after fishing, to dry its plumage.
