A formerly fortified village

The village of Castellar in the Alpes-Maritimes department has stood on Saint-Sébastien hill since 1435. At that time, it was protected by ramparts destroyed in the middle of the 18th century. A door, located at the northern entrance to the village, is the only remaining vestige. The southern part of Castellar, which surrounds the parish church built in the 15th century to replace the Saint-Sébastien chapel, results from a later extension dating back to the end of the 16th century.
