Made up of red rhyolite rocks like the rest of the Estérel massif of which it is part, L'Île d'Or is located in the locality of Saint-Raphaël in the Var department, 2,066 ft (630 m) off the bluish pebbled landing beach of the Dramont. The 639 ft (195 m) long and 370 ft (113 m) wide rocky islet covers an area of 2,706 acres (1,095 ha) and rises to 49 ft (15 m). Auctioned by the French state in 1897 to the architect Léon Sergent for 280 francs (1,112 euros), the islet was first mentioned at the beginning of the 20th century when its second owner, Auguste Lutaud, had a Saracen tower erected there in 1909. Declared a self-proclaimed kingdom, L'île d'Or became the scene of sumptuous receptions attracting the society of the French Riviera. It has been a registered site since March 17, 1941.
