The main streets of the upper town of Vaison-la-Romaine, established in the Middle Ages on the left bank of the Ouvèze river, have mostly been laid out against the slope. This decision aimed to facilitate the traffic and the establishment of mansions to accommodate the noble and bourgeois families. Linking the Place du Vieux Marché to the west to the Place de l'Église to the east, these streets have been cobbled and paved with river pebbles recovered from the Ouvèze.
