New Caledonia has many islets with a typical morphology : small in size and rather compact in shape, they are covered with a dense vegetation bordered by white sand and a fringing reef. These islets constitute natural reserves for the marine and terrestrial flora and fauna and shelter numerous sea birds which nest in the trees or on the sand of their emerged parts.
