Two domes in one

The Dôme des Invalides, with its golden lantern surmounted by a spire, rises to 107 metres. It is, without doubt, the most beautiful and highest dome in France. Moreover, the Americans were inspired by it to build the Capitol in Washington. The Dôme des Invalides consists of a drum on two unequal levels with small windows invisible from the inside of the building. Two interlocking cupolas make up the interior of the dome. The first is dedicated to the twelve apostles painted by Jean Jouvenet. Its ceiling opens onto the second dome, the centre of which is decorated with a fresco dedicated to Saint Louis, signed by Charles de La Fosse.
