Two distinct and complementary units

The two salt marshes areas in the locality of Hyères in the Var department offer diverse landscapes shared between two distinct yet complementary geographic units. The oldest saltworks, the Vieux Salins (photo), extend over 865 acres (350 ha) with irregular subdivisions due to the reunification of different long-independent production units. The more recent Salin des Pesquiers, on the other hand, presents, on 1,359 acres (550 ha), a less wild salt production area made up of a single entity with an almost perfect grid typical of Mediterranean salt flats.
