The lac Blanc (White lake) is an altitude lake in the Vosges mountains, located on the outskirts of the town of Orbey. It takes its name from the color of the crystalline sand lining its bottom. At an altitude of 3,461 ft (1,055 m), it occupies a natural glacial cirque in a setting of rocks and fir trees. The White lake is connected by a pipeline to the lac Noir (Black lake), located 328 ft (100 m) downstream. A hydroelectric power station allows the production of electricity by turbines at peak hours. During off-peak hours, water is pumped from Black lake to recharge White lake.
