Twelve winged women statues
0
0
Under the Dôme des Invalides, the sarcophagus of Napoleon I occupies the centre of a crypt surrounded by pillars with twelve statues of winged women. These Victories symbolise the victorious campaigns led by Napoleon Bonaparte, whose twelve names are inscribed on the floor. The 3.5-metre-high white marble statues are the work of the sculptor James Pradier. All of them are draped in the style of Antiquity and differ in the details of their dress or hairstyle and in the accessories held in their hands: palms, crowns, swords or trumpets. A conformity and homogeneity demanded by the architect Louis Visconti.
