In African elephants (Loxodonta), both males and females have continuously growing tusks. They grow about fifteen centimeters (6 inches) per year throughout the life of the elephant, which itself also grows all its life. Elephants must therefore use them on purpose to shorten them and lighten them to prevent them from being too long or too heavy and becoming a handicap.
