The city of Cherbourg in the Cotentin is turned towards the sea, with no less than five ports. The marina, fishing, military, cruise, and trade harbors are protected by the largest artificial harbor in the world. The city was considered by Vauban as one of the two ‘keys to the kingdom’ under king Louis XIV and it quickly became a first-rate military port. Cherbourg was also the Titanic's one and only continental stopover in 1912!
