The lagoon surrounding Tubuai is the largest of the Australs with an area of ​​52.8sqmi (85km2), i.e twice that of the island. Its characteristic color, ranging from turquoise blue to jade green, is due to its shallow depth, which is around 19.6ft (6m). In the South and South-East of the island, it can locally reach 82ft (25m).
