Ouvéa Atoll has many anchialine water holes linked to the ocean by an underground connection. These holes are characteristic of stratified aquifers of varying density with fresh to brackish surface water becoming salty at a certain depth. Their water level fluctuates according to the tides and depending on the distance of the water holes to the coast and on the hydraulic conductivity of the geological materials.
