Three sunken villages
2
0
When the Lac du Der-Chantecoq was created at the end of the 1960s, three villages – Nuisement-aux-Bois, Chantecoq and Champaubert-aux-Bois – disappeared, razed to the ground before being covered by water. However, some buildings, including the beautiful timber-framed church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Nuisement, were saved. Dismantled piece by piece, the church was reconstructed in the village-museum of Der in Sainte-Marie-du-Lac. The church of Champaubert, built on a hill, was saved from the waters. It now watches over the lake from its promontory reinforced by a dyke.
