Three song variants
0
0
The song of cicadas may seem strident, heady, and monotonous to human ears that sometimes even suffer from its intensity. However, it includes three variants available to the males of each species. The first is a community exchange song responding to the daily weather fluctuations and songs from other males. The second is a courtship song intended to attract a breeding partner and giving larger males a competitive advantage in sexual selection. Finally, the third is a squawk of danger used when the cicada feels threatened.
