The architect Jean-François Chalgrin designed the Arc de Triomphe in a neoclassical style inspired by ancient Roman architecture. The monument was to remain the highest arch in the world for a hundred years after its inauguration in 1836. The four groups of sculptures on the pillars represent the “The Departure of the Volunteers in 1792” by François Rude, “The Triumph of 1810” by Jean-Pierre Cortot, “The Resistance of 1814” and “The Peace of 1815” by Antoine Etex. The names of 158 battles in Europe and 660 officers of the First Republic and the First Empire are engraved on the Arc de Triomphe
