Tribe and clans : characteristics and transmission

The tribe - here the Mu tribe - is the traditional living environment of the Kanak of Lifou in the Loyalty Islands where time seems to take another dimension. They live in close contact with their land in huts discreetly scattered in the vegetation. Very attached to the customary organization, they form clans within their own tribe. The father's clan transmits the name, the totem (specific manifestation of the ancestors) and the right of property while that of the mother gives the body and the soul, the flesh and the blood. The respect due to the men of the mother's clan and to the elders is characteristic of the Kanak society.
