Braiding pandanus
3
0
Braiding and basketry from rushes, aloe stalks, bourao, coconut palms or pandanus - as here - are common traditions in New Caledonia where the elders fight to save these skills. Handcrafted objects (hats, bags, baskets, mats) are used in everyday life. Easier to work than rushes, the many varieties of pandanus, locally called 'vacoa', must be cut in dry weather, then dried and boiled before they can be braided.
