Polynesians have practiced gender equality since well before the twentieth century when power was indifferently vested in women or men, as evidenced by Queen Pomare IV of Tahiti or the Marquesan female chiefs. In the Austral Islands, they are very active in crafts and agriculture, only fishing remaining a sector rather reserved for men.
