The Salettes infantry redoubt was transformed into an artillery work under the leadership of General François-Nicolas-Benoît Haxo (1774-1838). He had an exterior moat built around the initial square tower, which he defended with casemates and several bastions. A military engineer, Haxo is often compared to Vauban for his innovations in the field of fortifications.
