Treatment of the shell fractures
0
0
Tortoises shell fractures are treated as open infected wounds, both locally and on a general scale. The wound is first cleaned with an antiseptic solution (photo). When the fracture is clean, stable, and without loss of substance, it is reduced by a fast-setting epoxy resin. If the fracture line is unstable, it is stabilized by metal strapping or screwed plates used in orthopedic surgery before the application of a resin to perfect the consolidation. In the event of a significant loss of substance, a mold of the lost portion of the shell is made by gluing a wire mesh covered with sheets of fiberglass and epoxy resin.
