Honfleur extends on the edge of the Seine estuary in the Calvados department. Its Vieux Bassin district, dating from 1681, has typical Norman houses, some of which are covered with essentes (facade tiles) in slate or traditional half-timbering. Most date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The streets adjacent to Quai Sainte-Catherine are still paved the old way with cobbles. Near the Hôtel de la Lieutenance, dwellings from the 16th century and traces of the old ramparts are visible.
