In Corsica, the hinterland of Balagne is home to several small villages perched at the foot of mountains. North of Calvi, Montemaggiore is perched on a rocky peak 381 m (1,250 ft) high overlooking the plain of Calenzana. At the foot of the village, olive groves testify to the olive growing tradition of the region. But the growth of the maquis is evidence of the gradual narrowing of cultivated areas.
