The location of the towns along the Durance depends on the height of its course. On its rather steep upper course, they dominate the river on rocky outcrops like Sisteron (photo), while they are set back at the foot of hills on its widened lower course like Manosque. Avignon, in the plain, remains threatened by the great floods of the river.
