The proportions of the Louvre Pyramid are those, at a reduced scale, of the pyramid of Khufu in Giza. It has a floor area of 1,000 m2 and is 21.65 m high. The aluminium frame weighs 95 tonnes and is made up of 673 glass panels. Saint-Gobain Vitrages France created a soda-lime glass, bleached with selenium. The glass is then laminated with four sheets of polymer, for a final thickness of 21 millimetres. This technical challenge required the construction of a furnace that could absorb the iron oxide that naturally turns the glass green. The Louvre Pyramid is the world’s first major achievement in laminated glass.
