‘In the air’ woodturning

The ‘in the air’ woodturning technique practiced here by Robert Marichy in his Arinthod workshop holds the piece of wood by only one end of the lathe, on its headstock side. It is used to hollow out a piece using a hollowing or profiling gouge for cross timber or a ring or scraping tools for end grain pieces. It allows attacking the object to be worked from all its points, except its attachment point.
