Toting in South Africa

The passive transportation of loads in balance on one's head, called toting in English, is a common practice in different points of the globe and notably in South Africa. The object can be carried directly on the skull or rest on a frontal band or a circular pad made of vegetable fiber to both protect the skull and facilite the load balancing. Depending on the virtuosity of the carrier, the load is maintained by the arm or not. An almost exclusive prerogative of the female gender, toting is very occasional in men who rather carry loads on their shoulders.
